Empowering a Net-Zero Future with Green Technology
Yahong Dong | Director, Macau Institute of Green and Net-Zero Technology
Building on Macau University of Science and Technology's strengths in engineering, interdisciplinary research, and sustainable campus development, the Macau Institute of Green and Net-Zero Technology will advance research innovation, talent development, technology transfer, and regional collaboration in response to China's dual-carbon strategy, Macao's green transition, and low-carbon development needs across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
Green and low-carbon transition and net-zero development are shared priorities for global scientific innovation, urban governance, and industrial upgrading. Macau University of Science and Technology has long valued sustainable development, engineering innovation, and interdisciplinary talent cultivation. The Institute was established to further bring together research capacity in green buildings, carbon accounting, net-zero technologies, smart campuses, nature-based solutions, blue carbon economy, remote sensing and digital twins, and artificial intelligence, building a teaching and research platform that serves the needs of Macao and the Greater Bay Area.
Guided by MUST's 2039 carbon neutrality goal, the Institute will advance the MUST Zero smart zero-carbon campus system and explore application scenarios in campus carbon emissions data management, greenhouse gas accounting, green building technology deployment, and net-zero pathway assessment. We aim to develop the campus into a living platform for green and net-zero technologies, enabling research outcomes to be validated, refined, and translated in real-world settings.
The Institute will also strengthen teaching and talent development by supporting degree programmes, general education, specialized training, and interdisciplinary research training, cultivating a new generation of talent with engineering thinking, environmental awareness, data capabilities, and social responsibility. We believe a net-zero future requires not only technological breakthroughs, but also more interdisciplinary professionals who understand the needs of policy, industry, cities, and society.
Looking ahead, the Institute will deepen collaboration with research teams on and off campus, government agencies, industry partners, and international platforms, promoting the application of green and net-zero technologies in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond. We sincerely look forward to working with partners across sectors to turn sustainability principles into verifiable, implementable, and scalable technical solutions, and to contribute together to low-carbon cities and a better future.
